Recap of #consciousharvard in FY19

June 24, 2019

FY19 was a powerful and productive year for #consciousharvard

In FY19, we were proud to launch our initiative and raise awareness for #consciousharvard at a kickoff event.  Three members of the University community shared stories of their own “conscious moments” of not belonging, of racism, and of feeling excluded.  Over 200 people attended.  The board has since been hosted by many University schools and units including Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), Alumni Affairs and Development (AA&D), Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS).  It continues to capture thought-provoking comments and stories from the Harvard community.

(see where it’s been on the “boards on tour” map).

Data Collected

We’ve collected over 600 comments via the boards and our newly launched website(link).

Dedicating the Sounding Board

In an upcoming event, the boards will be dedicated to Forrest Jessee, co-designer of the initiative, who sadly passed away in May, 2019.  We are grateful to him, and to Dan Borelli for creating our vision.

We’re proud to have been awarded a Full Promise Innovation Fund (FPIF) grant to continue our efforts for the new academic year. With that funding, we plan to generate more of an online presence, host more live events, and collaborate with data analytics faculty and staff to analyze our data.  The data we compile from the #consciousharvard initiative will be summarized and shared with Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging leaders across Harvard.  We’re committed to ensuring that the data we’ve collected informs taking action toward a more inclusive Harvard.
